What are stoplight books?
Stoplight books are the books that are sent home daily with each student. In the book they have colored a stoplight to tell you what kind of day they had in the morning and in the afternoon. Green means that they had a great day. Yellow means that they had a day with some reminders about appropriate second grade behavior. Red means that they acted inappropriately several times during the day and red usually means that there was a serious offense. This book needs to be signed daily. Any time a student comes to school without a signature it will be highlighted. At the end of the month, all students who had less than 4 oops! days will attend a Green Party. An oops! day is a day when they had a yellow, red, or unsigned book. Please feel free to write notes in the stoplight book if there is anything you need me to know. In addition to this, I often write notes to the families in these books. These books are very important for parent teacher communication. The books also give us the opportunity to stress good behavior rather than inappropriate behavior.
What are Book Bag Books?
Book Bag Books are the take home reading program that I have developed for the classroom. Every student has a day to return Book Bag Books. That means that they have one week to read three books with a member of their family at home. There are tickets that need to be signed in the bag saying that an adult has listened to the child read the book. I will keep a log in the classroom of how many books each student reads. Each time they bring ten tickets back they will be given a reward. The rewards consist of books to keep, shoelaces, shoelace charms, and free pizza’s from the Pizza Hut Book It Program. This program is very important for the reading success of all students in room 103.
What is Spelling Relay?
Spelling Relay is the homework for room 103. Every Monday a spelling list will be sent home. There are eight activities that your child may choose from for homework. Each night they need to choose an activity and return four completed activities on Friday. There will be a test on Friday. All of the activities can be completed by the students with little or no assistance. The activities are as follows:
1. Write the spelling list in Alphabetical order.
2. Write the spelling words sailboat style.
3. Write the spelling words in sentences.
4. Draw a picture of what each word means.
5. Write the spelling words wagon wheel style.
6. Write a story using all of the spelling words.
7. Use the chart to add up how much each word is worth.
