Welcome to Room 214!

My name is Kristin Heikel and this is my second year teaching fourth grade at Field Club Elementary.  Fourth grade is a transition year from primary to intermediate, and I am excited to help my students meet this challenge.  Fourth graders are expected to Stay on Target and make sure to get their assignment book signed.  At the beginning of the year, we made the following classroom rules:

           1. Be respectful to yourself and others.

             2. Be responsible.

             3. Be safe at all times.

Fourth grade offers interesting and challenging curriculum.  We will be preparing for the State Writing Test in February, State Reading Test in April, and 7 Math CRT tests throughout the year.  The following is a basic overview of the fourth grade curriculum:

Social Studies:

culture, history, maps, and geography of Nebraska.

Math:

addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, algebra, measurement, graphing, and problem solving.

Writing:

writing a 5 paragraph personal narrative using the 6 Traits.

Science:

inquiry, rocks and minerals, electricity, and living things.

Reading:

Daily Five, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Word Work:

Sitton's spelling and word analysis.

Helping Your Students at Home

These activities can be done for about 5-10 minutes each night.

1.  Practice addition, subtraciton, multilplication or division flash cards (available at school).

2.  Practice Core spelling words (sent home earlier this year).

3.  Writing down 3-5 sentences of what they learned at school.

4.  Reading aloud from a book, magazine, newspaper, or reading to a younger sibling.

5.  Practice print and cursive handwriting by writing spelling words.

*Students should always read 20 minutes each night.*
