We are having a great year!  We are learning a lot of new things.  This is my 10th year teaching at good 'ol Edison and I feel truly blessed that I have the opportunity to work with these wonderful students.

In Reading we are working on comprehension, vocabulary, making connections, asking questions, getting mind pictures, reading strategies, and more.  Each student will write in a Reader's Notebook each week letting me know what they are reading and making connections to what they are reading.  I will write back to them each week in a letter format.  I will ask them questions to challenge them to get deeper meaning from what they read.  We have been reading novels as well as the normal classroom curriculum.  The students are getting deeper understanding from the great books they are reading this year.  Some of our favorites are Shiloh, The Bridge to Terabithia, and Zach's Lie.

We are also writing every day using the 6 Traits of Writing.  Writer's Notebook is a fun way for them to write each day.  The students made a list of topics for them to write about or they will get a writing prompt.  We use the writing process to complete writing projects.  The students really enjoy Writer's Workshop as well as sharing their pieces.

Math is a fun challenge for everyone.  We reviewed facts at the beginning of the year so we could be ready for other math such as place value, decimals, graphing, geometry, decimals, and fun fractions.

We are will work on 3 units in Science:  Weather, Ecosystems, and  Light and Sound.  We did a fun pH experiment to see how pH or Acid Rain affects pennies as well as the environment.  We have learned about the water cycle, soundwave, eyeball, lightwaves, and will learn more such as the predator/prey relationship later.

Social Studies is based out of our textbook.  We will read and discuss during each lesson as well as supplement with other great books and materials.  Students will complete "Lesson Notes" that will give them good skimming and scanning skills as well as review what they read in that lesson.  For all subjects we will make graphic organizers of what we read to help us remember what we read.

Here are things that you can do so you are successful for this year.

  • Practice all flashcards so that you can get them within 1-2 seconds.
  • Read 30 minutes or more EVERYDAY and discuss what you read with someone or write out connections, questions, and predictions.
  • Write in a journal for fun.  Write how you are feeling, about an experience, or anything you want to write about.
  • MAKE SURE YOU GET AT LEAST 10 HOURS OF SLEEP EACH NIGHT!!!

Please feel free to contact me at school: 392-7310 or e-mail me:  michelle.woods@ops.org
