This is the third year that 4th grade students have been invited to participate in the Omaha Symphony program entitled Communities LinkUP! This program includes classroom instruction, school visits by professional musicians, and an interactive orchestra concert. LinkUp! is a standards-based music education program modeled on a successful initiative used in the New York City public schools for over twenty years, facilitated by Carnegie Hall. The program culminates in an interactive symphony concert at the Holland Performing Arts Center (April 16, 2007) in which students participate by answering questions, singing, and playing recorders to demonstrate the concepts they have learned. As a lead teacher for the program, I was asked to assist Omaha Symphony Educational Director Jennifer Boomgaarden with a presentation at Carneige Hall in September 2007. The unique Omaha Music Mentor Program was very interesting to symphony directors across the nation!
