Extra Value Standards

Grade 2 & 3
All 2nd and 3rd grade students perform on the violin, accurately and independently, alone and in small and large ensembles, with good posture, good playing position and good bow control.
Grade 2 visual arts special focus: FIBER ARTS.  The students will use knowledge, vocabulary, techniques and processes associated with hand-dyed yarn weaving and handmade paper making.

Grade 3
All 3rd grade students demonstrate how voice (diction, pace, and volume), and body language, may be used to enhance the telling of a story by narrating, and creating a soundtrack for an iMovie.  

Grade 3 visual arts special focus: PAINTING.  The students will use knowledge, vocabulary, techniques and processes associated with watercolor and tempera painting

Grade 4
All 4th grade students compose songs within specified guidelines, demonstrating how the elements of music are used to achieve unity and variety, tension and release, and balance under the direction of professional lyricists and composers, which are notated and recorded using digital/electronic technology.  Compositions are performed in concert.

All 4th grade students identify and play treble clef music notation for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation, and expression; and are introduced to skills necessary to play a wind instrument in an ensemble during weekly instruction on the recorder.

Grade 4 visual arts special focus: CLAY.  The students will use knowledge, vocabulary, techniques and processes associated with a variety of pottery methods including the use of ceramic glazes.

Grades 4 - 6
All 4th, 5th, & 6th grade students expand and further develop individual listening, reading, and writing skills during computer assisted music theory instruction in both large group settings, and independent practice on iBooks.

Grade 5
All 5th grade students demonstrate their knowledge of sound properties by completing a web quest to invent a sound machine (musical instrument).  Project presentations are filmed and edited using iMovie software.

Grade 5 visual arts special focus: PRINTMAKING.  The students will use knowledge, vocabulary, techniques and processes associated with a variety of printmaking methods including b lock and mono printing.

Grade 6
6th grade students demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of stage and theater by performing in a musical theater production.

6th grade students compose short pieces within specified guidelines for their chosen instrument demonstrating knowledge of the basic principles of meter, rhythm, tonality, intervals, and harmonic progression; and notate using digital/electronic technology.

6th grade string students evaluate the quality and effectiveness of others’ music performances by applying specific criteria appropriate for the style of the music and offer constructive suggestions for improvement.

Grade 6 visual arts special focus: SCULPTURE.  The students will use knowledge, vocabulary, techniques and processes associated with a variety of sculptural forms and materials including clay, polymer clay, wire and recycled objects.
