Hello,
Welcome to my classroom website. I'm very happy to be working with your child in my classroom. If at anytime you need to contact me please call the school at 554-8570 or e-mail me at
.
I have been teaching in OPS for my entire teaching career. I was also a classroom paraprofessional for 6 years prior to beginning my teaching career. I received my BS in Graphic Arts Management from South Dakota State Univerisity. I returned to school and obtained my teaching endorsement from Eastern New Mexico State University. I also have my ESL endoresment from Concordia Univeristy. I am married and have 2 children who are in college.
A little bit about what we will be covering this year in 5th grade. In Math we will be learning about place value (whole numbers and decimals), adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, fractions, algebra, geometry, measurement and problem solving. The students will be taking CRT's (criterion referenced tests) throughout the year.
In reading we will be working on comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and many skills to help students understand what they are reading. They will be working mostly in small groups during reading. Our goal is that students will not only be able to read, but make connections and contruct meaning from the texts that they are reading. We also are doing word study activities to help students increase their vocabulary. Students will be given CRTS in comprehension and vocabulary that are reported to the district.
Descriptive writing is the focus in writing this year. Students will be given a writing CRT in the spring that will be reported to the district. We also are using Sitton spelling in class. Students do many activities in small group. At the end of the section they are given a test. The words they miss become their spelling words to study.
Our main areas of study in Science are: weather, light and sound, and ecosystems. We will go to Fontenelle Forest in the fall as part of our study of the water cycle. Students will be doing many hands on activities in class this year. They will also be taking CRTS in science. All of the scores are reported to the district.
As you can see, we will be very busy this year. Your child will be taking many assessments through the year. Please help encourage them to do their best.
