 Dear Parents:

Our annual BOBCAT BASH is almost here: Students will not wear their costumes to school. they will bring costumes to school on Friday, October 30, 2009 (no weapons, no blood) and all students will parade the Beals neighborhood starting at 2:15 pm. PTA provides juice and a craft for every student. If your student does not participate due to religious reasons, please know that your child should attend school and they will partake in other school related activities.

Grade Level News

This school year all grade levels  will continue to promote all of the 40 Developmental Assets, but focusing particularly on some of those assets that promote academic achievement and that schools are most likely to influence. This is "An Asset a Month" that can help us work together as we give children the skills they need to be successful. Below is the "Asset a Month" schedule for this year:

November: Empowerment: #9 Service to others

December: Constructive use of time: #17: Creative Activities

January: Commitment to Learning: #25 Reading for Pleasure

February: Social Competence: #33 Interpersonal Competence

March: Support: #5 Caring School Climate

April:    Boundaries and Expectations: #15 Positive Peer Influence

May: Constructive Use of Time: #18 Youth Programs

Each month, students will learn more about the assets during their guidance lessons and often times, there will be school wide activities related to the monthly asset theme. Be creative and share with us the ways you reinforce these assets at home, too!

WELCOME TO BEALS

Please join the Beals staff in welcoming our newest members of our Beals team! Ms. Heck, our bilingual liaison is here to assist all students and families. She is bilingual, speaking fluently in Spanish as well as English. Mrs. Mickie, our health aide joins the Beals staff as a very qualified health aide, working in the medical field for many years prior to working at Beals. We are also very excited to introduce, Danielle Patocka, and Sarah Wassinger who both assist in our pre-kindergarten classrooms.

Every little bit,  makes a big difference!  It is never too late to start this routine: (The Daily Three) in your home! Please require daily that your student:

1. Reads to him/herself

2. Reads aloud to someone

3. Listens to someone reading

School Psychology Awareness

November 9-13 has been designated as School Psychology Awareness Week. Consistent with trends within the profession, school psychologists working in Omaha Public Schools perform a variety of job duties. Responsibilities include consultation with principals, teachers, counselors, and other staff regarding learning, behavioral, or mental health issues that may be affecting a student's success in school. School psychologists also work closely with parents/guardians, community, and social service agencies to address concerns regarding students. Psychological evaluations may be conducted to help develop intervention plans or to assist in determining eligibility for special education services. In addition to consultation and evaluation, school psychologists are called upon to respond to individual or building-wide crisis situations. Providing wide-ranging services, school psychology continues to contribute to the educational, social, and emotional well-being of all students.
