BEALS BOBCAT PARENTS

FLI is the Family Leadership Institute for our Beals Parents only. There is limited space. You will participate in collaboration with other Beals parents in sessions that will focus on helping your child succeed in school and life.  After the completion of the program a formal graduation will take place. Childcare is provided. Omaha Public Schools is committed to this program and will be funding the entire program. If you are interested in participating in being a part of the Beals parent FLI please contact Mr. Guenther or Ms. Torres at Beals 554-8570 so that your name may be submitted. You will receive more information at your home address. Space is limited so hurry!

Extended Learning Opportunities
Beals Summer School
Summer School dates are June 2-June 20, from 8:30-2:00.  Students will experience a fun, rich learning classroom for additional 3 weeks and the opportunity to participate in learning adventures outside of the school. If you did not get your student signed up, we will continue to accept student applications until the last week in May. Please request a summer school application from the front office.

ENS-Emergency Notification System
We are really trying hard to make sure that all of our students are safe in the most needed times. OPS will be doing a test trial of our new Emergency Notification System. You will only be able to participate if you have turned in the sheet that was mailed to your home. Please return the sheet identifying which numbers are to be called in an Emergency situation. You may return the sheet on the back of this newsletter if it has been misplaced. It is very important that you return this sheet. Thanks for helping us make sure your child is always safe.

DAILY THREE
Please require that your student participate in the Beals Daily Three:
1. Reads to him/herself
2. Reads aloud to someone
3. Listens to someone reading
The more students read the better readers they become!

Beals Star Book Club
We will have one last celebration of your student meeting their reading goals. Don’t miss out on the chance for your student to celebrate making their fourth quarter reading goal. Keep reading, the next Beals Bobcat reading celebration is on May 21, 2008. Be sure your student turns in their star reading sheet.

Kudos to….
Our Fourth Graders who did such an awesome job on the statewide writing assessment. This year 86% of our Fourth Graders displayed a great effort in writing. This is an increase in student academic performance from last year. Way to go fourth graders.

Tornado Safety
With spring arriving, we have new information to think about and practice. Before Spring Break, we practiced severe weather procedures. Early warning, advance preparation, and a proper response based on a severe weather plan will minimize concerns arising during weather episodes.
Parents are asked to please keep in mind the procedures that effect schools and the safety of students:
* We have developed safety plans to be followed in the event of a tornado warning.
* Tornado drills are held periodically so that students and staff members will be aware of the safest areas in the building.
* For safety reasons for parents and students, it is strongly advised that parents do not pick up children during a tornado warning.
* When warning sirens are sounding at the end of the day, dismissal will be delayed until the warning is no longer in effect.
