Letters to Soldiers
We were so fortunate to have a soldier from Iraq visit with our second through sixth grade students last week!   Major Sergeant Jim   had pictures of Iraq to share with us.  Since many of the soldiers look forward to mail, he would like us to have the students write letters to them and he would take them back with him.  What a neat opportunity to send encouragement to those who are fighting for freedom!  Letters are not addressed to anyone in particular, will not include personal information, are only signed with a first name and room number and the return address is to Beals School.  We don’t know if we will receive letters in response, yet we are excited about helping!  If you would prefer your child not send a letter, please send a note to the teacher by tomorrow.  Thank you!!!

Reminder!!!!!!!!!
There will be early dismissal on Friday, Feb. 16th at 1:25p.m.
No School on Monday, Feb. 19th in honor of Presidents Day.
No School on Tuesday, Feb. 20th – Teacher In-service Day.
 Outstanding Teacher Award Buffett
Here at Beals we are blessed with many fine teachers who make a difference in the lives of students each and every day!  They give far beyond normal “duty hours” to try to make sure each and every child is successful.  They truly touch the lives of the future.
If you and your child would like to recognize a teacher for his/her outstanding work, please write a letter of nomination to the Buffett Foundation.  It doesn’t have to be formal: don’t worry if you think you don’t write well.  Letters should just be a heartfelt expression of why you think this teacher would be a worthy candidate for a Buffett Award.
Nominated teachers must be certificated and have taught in the Omaha Public Schools for a minimum of two years.  Winners will be announced in May.  The deadline for application is Jan. 31, 2007 and all nominations should be sent to:
The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation
222 Kiewit Plaza
Omaha, Ne. 68131

Geo-domes
The 5th grade gifted group has been studying the principles of architecture and engineering this year. (Khalif, Elizabeth, Ariant and Nicole).
The geo-desic dome is made from 65 newspapers, rolled into dowels, or sticks. The joints are connected with masking tape.  You can see a model they made on the second floor outside of the library.
Geo-domes were made popular in the 1940’s after the war when inexpensive housing was needed.  People actually live in dome homes!! Buckminster Fuller is the man credited for making the domes popular.  Believe it or not, as the domes get larger, they get stronger.  Also, the triangle is the strongest shape used in construction, and the geo-desic dome consists of all triangles. Geo-domes can even withstand the strength of hurricanes.
A geo-dome that you have probably seen is at the Desert Dome at the Henry Doorly Zoo.  Some playgrounds have jungle gyms that look like geo-domes.   If you’d like to try making your own geo-dome at home, see Mrs. Collins for instructions.
