Parent Teacher Conferences

Conferences are quickly approaching!  Parents/Guardians were able to sign up for a time at Open House.  If you haven’t heard from your child’s teacher, please call us to see when a time is available.  The teachers have been so accommodating!  They are even scheduling additional times outside of the planned days to meet with parents regarding their child’s progress.  Scheduled times are:

Prekindergarten Students:
All day Wednesday and Thursday, October 26th and 27th.  No school for prekindergarten students.

Grades Kdg. through 6th grade
Wednesday, October 26th 4-7:30 p.m.
Early dismissal at 12:40 p.m. on Thursday, October 27th.
Thursday, October 27th 4-8:00 p.m.

No school for all students on Friday, October 28th.

***Remember When …we were growing up and used to get our report cards?  Well, it’s not quite the same.  The grades are different!  The achievement grading scale is as follows:
˜    1  --  Excellent
˜    2  --  Good
˜    3  --  Satisfactory
˜    4  --  Fair
˜    5  --  Unsatisfactory
Grades are not only determined by written work, but class participation and teacher observation.

We also determine effort grades for each of the subject areas:
˜    O – Outstanding
˜    S -- Satisfactory
˜    N – Needs Improvement
˜    U -- Unsatisfactory

School Pictures

[Image:101305_62342_3.png]Individual pictures have already been taken at Beals.  As a safety precaution and for our records, we have pictures taken of all students.  As a free bonus this year, Scholastic Photography is providing two photo ID Student Safety Card for each student that parents can carry in his or her wallet or purse!   It will also give steps on “What to do if Your Child is Missing.”  Thank you Scholastic!

Visitors to Our School

With the exception of the front doors, all entrances to the school are locked from the outside as soon as each day begins.  Please do not try to gain entrance by having a student/adult open a locked door to let you in the building.  Students have been instructed to never open a locked door to allow someone to enter.

All visitors to the school are required to sign in at the security desk/office upon arrival.  Visitors will be given a visitor’s badge upon arrival.  The used badge is to be returned to the office at the end of the visit.  These policies are in effect at all Omaha Public Schools and help ensure the safety of our children.  Thank you for following these procedures.

We enjoy having parents visit our children for lunch.  Please let the office know if you will be joining us by 9:30 AM so we may plan a lunch for you.   Due to limited seating and assigned student seating in the lunchroom, we have a special visitors table for those who are joining us.

Tardies

OOOOOhhhhh…..student tardies are on the increase!   Students are tardy if they are not in their classroom by 8:55 AM and leave prior to 3:40 PM in the afternoon.  Did you know that for every 8 tardies it counts as a day absent?   Tardies also make students ineligible for Perfect Attendance.   One may think that “it’s only a few minutes” yet students are in their classrooms by the start of school and already working—“bell work” awaits them the minute they walk in the door.  We take advantage of every minute.  Over a period of time, those minutes add up!   Just 3 minutes twice a week over 9 weeks is 27 minutes of instruction missed!!  Let’s model for our students the meaning of being on time and most importantly, the meaning of being at school.

Holiday Program

We wanted to alert you early about the change in the Holiday Program.   This year the program is schedule for Tuesday, December 6th!  The morning program begins at 9:30 AM and the afternoon will begin at 1:30 PM.  In the past the Holiday Program has been on the last Friday before Winter Break, so this date is a change.  We are anticipating a terrific program!

From the Counselor’s Office….

Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated during the week of October 24th to the 27th.  It is a week in which various organizations, including schools, celebrate a drug-free life style.  Students will be asked to participate in “dress up” days to celebrate!  The schedule is below:
˜    Monday, October 24th –“Put a Cap on Drugs” – Wear a cap to school
˜    Tuesday, October 25th – “ Team Up Against Drugs” – Wear your favorite team gear(Huskers, Chiefs, Beals Bobcats, etc.)
˜    Wednesday, October 26th – “Sock It to Drugs Day”—Wear crazy socks
˜    Thursday, October 27th – “Wear Red Day” – Wear red clothing.
Other activities will also be conducted at school during the week.  I will also present information and lessons about choosing a drug-free life style.
            Sincerely,
            Ken Guenther, Counselor

PTA

Have you joined PTA?  We hope so.  The class with the most PTA memberships will have a party!  We have our next PTA meeting tonight at 4:00 PM in the library.  At our last meeting, we seemed to have a few more parents attending since it is right after school.

The fundraiser pick up is tonight beginning at 4-7:00 PM!  Be sure to get your items as we have no where to store the frozen food.

Halloween    [Image:101305_60419_2.png]
We will be participating in Halloween activities on Monday, October 31st,  beginning at 2:15 p.m.  Students may dress up in costumes, if they choose.  We encourage students to relate your costume to a book character or a positive famous person.  Please leave blood and toy weapons at home!  We will be going on parade, weather permitting.   The parade route will include going out the east doors and taking the sidewalk in front of the building west to 49th street.  We will come down the street behind the building and enter the building at the gym door.  A drink and treat are provided by the PTA.  Thank you PTA!!
