Student Placement Office The Student Placement Office is responsible for assigning students to schools in accordance with the Student Assignment PLAN of the Omaha Public Schools. This is accomplished through the school selection process and the review and approval of requests to transfer between schools. This office also offers the CADRE program which assists families in selecting and enrolling their children in school during three weeks leading up to the start of the school year. The Placement Officers also coordinate Foreign Exchange Programs, alternative education placements, reassignments, emancipation of students, the assignment of acting/surrogate parents and work with shelters. Student Personnel Assistants Student Personnel Assistants (SPAs) insure that students attend school and facilitate their learning by removing barriers to success. SPAs work with families and students to encourage regular school attendance and with the courts to bring non-attending students into compliance with Nebraska laws governing mandatory school attendance (Statute 79-201). SPAs assist building administrators in maintaining a climate that supports learning while assuring that students who engage in unacceptable behaviors are treated fairly and receive appropriate due process. Student Personnel Assistants facilitate appropriate responses to the alleged possession of illegal substances at school. SPAs are first responders to incidents of child abuse and neglect, referring students to the Omaha Police Department when appropriate, and making referrals to social agencies to assist students and families in need. English as a Second Language Placement Services The Student Personnel Services Division also houses the English As A Second Language Placement Services. Interpreters, translators and bilingual liaisons are available to facilitate students and families who speak primary languages other than English in school selection and enrollment.
