There are 4 selection processes for school selection; elementary selection, middle school selection, magnet school selection and high school selection. Selections, once made, are for the school year selected.  All students have the opportunity to make a new selection during the selection process for the coming year.

Middle School students are restricted to very few options as the middle schools are naturally economically integrated in our district.  The exception being students in the Marrs Magnet School area are given the option to attend Bryan Middle School if they live in the Edward "Babe" Gomez Heritage Elementary School attendance area, or Norris Middle School if they live in the Spring Lake Elementary School attendance area.  Students in the Picotte Elementary School attendance area have the option to attend Buffet Magnet School following their 4th grade year, or may enter Buffet Magnet or Beveridge Magnet following the 6th grade. Students who live in the King Science and Technology Center attendance area may select to attend Morton Middle School, with transportation.Students who select an option school to their neighborhood school in the 6th grade, may follow those peers to the neighborhood middle school of the option school, with transportation, if the school is greater than 2.0 miles from their homes.  There are 3 magnet middle schools available to all students. Otherwise, students are automatically placed into their neighborhood schools.

The magnet school selection process for students and families began in October by magnet schools as they visit schools in their recruitment activities.  These activities include, but are not limited to, school visits, letters, peer mentoring and other activities that encourage students to attend their schools.  These activities are present until the magnet selection forms are due to the Student Placement Office on January 27, 2005.  The Magnet Fair at the Westroads Shopping Center on November 6th, provides students and families the opportunity to visit with school officials and students regarding offerings at their schools. The high school selection process begins in November and culminates in February.  There are two facets to the selection process; eighth graders selection for high school and present high school students making a selection to attend another high school.  High school placement is guaranteed to one's home attendance area when selected during the high school selection process.  Next guaranteed placement are for students who live in an elementary school attendance area that provides transportation to the high school.  A high school may close based on capacity issues and a student's selection may be either of their alternate selections.
