The Student Personnel Office has two separate arms. One is the Student Placement Office which implements the Student Assignment PLAN through the placement of students. This is accomplished through annual school selection, the review and processing of requests to move schools and the CADRE program which operates for 3 weeks prior to school starting to assist families in school entrance. The Placement Officers also coordinate Foreign Exchange Programs, alternative education placements, reassignments, emancipation of students, the assignment of acting/surrogate parents and work with shelters The Student Personnel Assistant (SPA) arm of SPS works to insure students attend school, and once there are able to learn by removing barriers to success. For this reason, the SPAs are responsible for working with families and students to get non-attending students enrolled in school or working with the courts to bring students into compliance with Nebraska Statute 79-201. The SPA is the expert of due process for both traditional and special education students, are first responders to child abuse and neglect and refer students to the Omaha Police Department when appropriate, the testing of narcotics, the movement of records and social agencies to assist students and families in need.
The Student Personnel Services Division also houses the English As A Second Language Placement Services. As a service to clients who speak primary languages other than English, interpreters, liaisons and translator is available to facilitate the placement of students into school who may not feel comfortable conducting business in English.
