Head Start children receive a well balanced breakfast, lunch and/or a snack each day, in order to meet at least one-third of their daily nutritional needs. A variety of foods are served in a ‘family style’, to give children opportunities to pass serving dishes and learn to develop their self-help skills. This also develops positive self-esteem and improves social skills. Registered Dieticians supervise menu planning and parents are encouraged to provide input regarding cultural and ethnic nutrition experiences during children’s mealtimes at Head Start centers. Children identified with food allergies or with restricted diets are accommodated.
