Omaha Public Schools…150 Years of Building the Future

“Omaha Public Schools…150 Years of Building the Future,” is the theme reflected on banners celebrating the history and accomplishments of a century and one-half of commitment to the principles and ideals of public education in the Omaha community. The Omaha Public Schools legacy is built upon a solid commitment to quality education for all students. During the 2009-2010 school year, teachers, their students and the entire school district will proudly celebrate the tradition of excellence and commitment that has provided an important thread in the fabric of our community.

For over 150 years, the School District of Omaha has educated successive generations of Omaha’s children. The present efforts of  maintaining a system of vibrant, free public schools has been established on the work of past generations of advocates who envisioned universal education that is equal, equitable and available to all children and young people.

The history of public education in America, in Nebraska and in the Omaha school district has evidenced numerous challenges and successes that are the result of both human frailty and human resolve in discovering what works best in the teaching and learning process. Nearly a decade into the 21st century, one could argue that in some ways we have gone in reverse when it comes to opening up opportunities for public education. The current economic downturn has put additional pressures on public schools and public school families. It is incumbent upon educators to help revitalize our nation and educate the next generation of Americans to meet the challenges of global competition.

History reveals both times of trial and error, as well as times of success and righteousness. During this span of 150 years, the developments in education brought about through progressivism and revisionism would be considered momentous from the viewpoint of a 19th century observer. While it is possible to look with dismay on the slow progress toward truly equitable educational opportunities for all youngsters, it is also possible that students and teachers who used the first computer—the abacus—would be astounded at today’s high-speed, ultra modern technology that provides instantaneous answers at the press of a button.

Despite the impact of a great economic crisis on public education, we have reasons to be optimistic. The numerous hours of volunteer assistance given by parents and patrons to our schools are simply outstanding. The materials and human resources provided by businesses, community organizations and Omaha philanthropy are of inestimable value to the success of what schools are accomplishing for students.

Furthermore, through its policies and actions, the members of the Board of Education have and will continue to maintain their commitment to educational equity for all youngsters in an integrated/inclusive school community. Their many dedicated hours of service, time and expertise will ensure a bright future of quality educational experiences for the students, staff and families of the School District of Omaha.

As we move ahead, we celebrate 150 Years of Building the Future in Omaha while sharing the common vision and mission of providing educational opportunities which enable all students to achieve their highest potential. The School District of Omaha and Public Education have the capacity to produce the ideas, tools, solutions and knowledge to ensure the momentum for the next 150 years!
