Compliance With Copyright Laws

District policy reads:

All employees of the Board of Education are responsible for compliance with copyright laws and for preventing unauthorized use or copying of copyrighted or proprietary materials. For purposes of Section 7.08, copyrighted or propietary materials shall include, but not be limited to:

  • computer software and documentation
  • audio and video recordings
  • books, newspapers, and other printed material bearing a copyright notice.

Any employee who makes an unauthorized copy or who makes an unauthorized use of copyrighted or proprietary materials may be subject to disciplinary action.

The department of General Administration shall be responsible for informing all school district personnel of this policy and of the rules for proper use of copyrighted or proprietary material.

Any employee who learns of any copyright or other proprietary right violation shall notify the assistant superintendent for General Administration.

Refer to the entire policy for specific provisions regarding computer software.

The library media specialist's role:

The library media specialist must model the ethics of information use and serve as a resource to the school community on issues regarding intellectual property rights, copyright, and fair use.  The information at the linked website is intended to assist the library media specialist in this role.
