2007 Photography Portfolio

This course introduces students to using photographic equipment and the inventive use of light to create art. This course is designed to develop higher-level thinking, art-related technology skill, art criticism, art history, and aesthetics. The class encourages the study of and respect for the medium's traditions as well as the exploration of new ideas and techniques. At the introductory level, the student will become proficient in using a manual 35mm camera to create photographic prints. Students will undertake a series of set projects designed to encourage the student to develop his or her creative and technical skills through processes related to photography. With this production of images for classroom critiques, the student will develop a valuable foundation for understanding the language of visual communications. Students will be exposed to notable photographers of accomplishment, as well as examining the history of photography. The equipment and materials necessary for the student to create his or her assignments will be provided. This includes the camera, various lenses, tripod, enlargers, processing chemicals, film, and photographic paper.

Prerequisite: None
Duration: Full year
Credit: 4 per year

The Advanced Photography program is designed to offer in-depth photographic experiences in the fields of Advertising Illustration, Portraiture, Fine Arts, and Photojournalism. Students will learn about new cameras, lenses, and film specifically geared for those areas, they will also study the techniques, style and philosophy associated with each. Students will be introduced to digital photography, Macintosh computers, Adobe PhotoShop, digital cameras, scanners, and printers. In addition, fine-tuning darkroom processing and printing skills is emphasized in the advanced program. The goal is to balance and perfect the standard darkroom techniques and the exciting world of digital photography. Building a portfolio is one of the requirements of this program. Students are encouraged to participate in regional and school-sanctioned competitions. Examples of career opportunities include: Portrait Photographer, Advertising Illustrator, Photojournalist, Fine Art Photographer, Architectural Photographer, and Wedding Photographer.
