This is the story of giant killer fighting a GIANT killer. In 1988, after years of trying to convince food companies to stop using high cholesterol oils in their food products, Sokolof and the association started running full-page advertisements in major newspapers around the country proclaiming a crusade to end "The poisoning of America!" The ads have been effective since nine of the ten major food producers have either ended the use of coconut and palm oils or announced plans to do it in the immediate future. Only RJR Nabisco has indicated an intent to retain its use of these heart-threatening high saturated fats. Sokolof's quest has been the topic of a focus article in TIME Magazine and on the TODAY and Good Morning America programs as well as in USA TODAY-television and newspaper. The goal of lowering saturated fats in the country's food products has cost Sokolof over one-half million dollars of this Omaha businessman's own money, but Sokolof believes the expense to be worth it if it helps to save lives. He became aware of the dangers of a diet high in saturated fats when he suffered a heart attack 23 years ago.
