Bernice Labedz - Class of 1937
Minimize
Mrs. Labedz is the First Lady of South Omaha. Her many years of service to her community have earned her stature, known to few, but justifiably deserved. Labedz was elected to the Douglas County Commission in November 1992 after serving four terms in the state legislature. Following appointment by former Governor James Exon to the unexpired term of fellow Hall of Fame recipient, Eugene Mahoney, Labedz was reelected to those terms with overwhelming majorities. During her stint in the legislature, Labedz was elected by her colleagues as chairman of the Executive Board, Reference Committee, Constitutional Revision and Recreation Committees. A life-long Democrat, Mrs. Labedz received the Franklin Delanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman Awards from the Democratic Party. Other awards include the Gerald T. Bergan Award of Mercy, the Conservationist of the Year Award, and the Distinguished Citizens Award for outstanding community service. Mrs. Labedz serves as an advisor to the South High Alumni Association and on the Board of Directors of the Meyer Children's Rehabilitation Institute, Uta Halee Girls Village Endowment Fund, and United Catholic Social Services, as well as many other service and community-related organizations.
