    <description>&amp;#160;
Dribble, dribble, dribble. She shoots, she scores, and the crowd goes wild. As you all know basketball season has crept up on us once again. Its time for all of the student and faculty alike to file into the gym for the pep rallies and then again later that night for the actual basketball game joining the parents and Benson fans. The basketball games are fun and exciting and you’ll have a great time if you know what happening on the court.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Why go to a basketball game if you don’t know how the game works right? This was me just weeks ago. Its sad really, my dad brought me to a Minnesota Timberwolves game once and I just sat there and cheered whenever he did just so he would think his pathetic daughter knew the game. When, in allactuality I have no idea how the game of basketball works, that’s why this week I’ve decided to learn a little about this mysterious craft.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; I learned that there are five basketball players from each team on the court at one time. The team with the ball is called the offense and the team without the ball is called the defense.&amp;#160;There are two halves in a game each quarter is eight minutes long. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, than the game goes into overtime.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Funny thing, there are actual rules in this game. While I was sweating on the court I made a few minor mistakes. Going down the list pushing, slapping, holding are all what you call fouls. I also made a couple violations walking/traveling, carrying/palming, double dribbling and charging which is a foul and violation. So I went Viking on their butts, so what?
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Although this game is fun and I learned something new I found that I am more of a spectator then an actual player. The important thing is that I tried and if you get a hair up your nose to sniff out something new, sniff your way to the basketball court and bring your sneakers, its difficult to play in flip flops.</description>

    <title>YouTube Nation</title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/719/YouTube-Nation.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;
The wonderful world of YouTube has been entertaining those with internet access for almost five years. People who have great ideas for videos have a place to upload their masterpieces for the whole world to see. From embarrassing pranks to wannabe singers, there’s no doubt that YouTube can be a source of unstinting amusement.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; One of the popular ways to enjoy YouTube is to log on to your favorite channel. For example, one channel that has become extremely popular lately has been none other than that of Fred Figglehorn. &amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Fred videos have gotten upwards of 65,480,608 views. In fact, he’s so popular, he made an appearance on iCarly. I’m sure many of us have even seen Fred merchandise at Hot Topic.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Although I must admit that I am fond of the lonely six-year-old boy who borrows his mother’s camera to video tape his morbid tales of Kevin and Bertha, there is another up and coming YouTube star.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; One day, when my friend was over, she borrowed my computer to get on her Myspace. After a moment or two of checking her inbox and what not she called me over to the table. “Sit down, we’re gonna watch this video that my friend sent me.”
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; So, I sat down next to her and we were enraptured in the hilarious and extremely attractive Levi on Corporal Cadet. In his videos, Levi usually sits down to tell us about his wacky adventures. One day he may be running from the cops on the back of Sean Connery’s motorcycle and the next he could be sporting a distinguished mustache and wresting a “blockage” in the sewers.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Although it may seem like a difficult task to bring in as many hits as the big shots in YouTube do, I think it’s a great way to express creativity. YouTube is a great way for people to take charge and become their own celebrities. &amp;#160;If you have a good idea for a video, take some advice from Nike and just do it. You never know. You might just be the next Fred Figglehorn.

    <title>Freshman survival guide</title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/636/Freshman-survival-guide.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The timid young student walks eagerly to their first block class, trying to make it there before the tardy chimes of doom. They try their best to push their way through the thrashing seas of students while frantically searching for their class. Alas they arrive at room 129. The visibly nervous freshman checks their schedule for the twelfth and final time before entering the class and taking their seat.&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; As high school freshmen, the first few days can be some of the scariest of your life. We at the Benson High News understand what you are going through, which is why we have composited a “freshmen survival guide” if you will, to help you get through the first of four long adventurous years.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;

    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/435/Walking-out-on-education.aspx</link>
    <description>Boring classes, boring teachers and none of your homework is finish? No problem. The only thing that you need to do to avoid these is just to skip class! The catch is, is it right? Is it okay to not go to class just because you do not feel like it?
Students here at Benson skip class everyday regardless of their grade level or gender. I see it all the time. Why? Just because they do not want to go to class and their teachers are boring. I understand the fact that classes and teachers may be boring but you are in school to learn and succeed in life, not to go hide in the restrooms for the entire class period or go somewhere like the mall.
What do you gain from skipping class? Fun and no homework for the day, yeah! Wrong, homework do pile up and teachers do start to notice when they see you walking or talking in the hallway with your friend and you did not showed up for class earlier.
&amp;#160;I am not going to lie; most of my friends skip classes just to avoid it. One of them even asked me if I wanted to skip with her a few times and my answer is always no. No I do not want to miss class. It may bore the heck out of me but at least I am learning something that I might need one day in life. After all I am here to succeed not to fail.
When asked about how other students feel about students skipping class, Sophomore Erick Manjarrez said, “I think that people shouldn’t skip because they need their education.”
And Manjarrez is right; you need your education to be successful in this fast moving technology world. This is reality not a fairly tale. You cannot go out into the real world without any knowledge thinking that you are going to achieve. Education is the key to succeed.
“I think that skipping is stupid”, said Senior Cheyanne Baker. “I think people do it because of drugs and alcohol.”
Whether it may be drugs, alcohol, sex, or just getting out of class; skipping does nothing for you except to make you not learn. If I offended you or you disagree with my opinion, I apologize but I just want to make it clear that skipping is ignorant.

“What’s the point of you going to school if you’re just going to skip?” said Manjarrez.

    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/411/What-we-do-not-see.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; You are standing in the hallway with your friends and see a student getting made fun of because of what they are wearing. What do you do in a situation like this?
&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; 150 out of 200 students here at Benson will help out if they knew the victim but if it was just another student, they would probably not help out.
&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “No one should laugh at them,” said Senior Marj Stamer, “They can’t help it.”
&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Personally, I agree with Stamer. They can not help the fact that they do not have all the top name brand stuff. Shoes are shoes and clothes are clothes. What is the difference? At least they got something covering themselves right?
&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “I feel that people shouldn’t talk about them just because they don’t have the name brand stuff,” said Junior Maggie Johnson. “They shouldn’t be judged on what they look like on the outside.”
&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Why do we judge people by how they look? It is not the outside that counts; it is the inside that matters. Lets say you are picking between two people to be your partner for a huge science project. One looks like he or she has never grew up from little kid clothes but is very smart. The other, has all the name brand clothes, shoes, etc. but does not care at all for their grade. Which one would you rather have?
&amp;#160;
If I were you, I would go for the first one because hey, they may not be the best looking person, but at least I know that I would get help on my project. It is better than having one that does not do anything and you both end up with an F.
&amp;#160;

My point of this story was to get the fact that just because somebody may look “fresh” on the outside may be “beat” on the inside and what may look ugly on the outside can be beautiful on the inside

Popsicle grins, scraped and bruised knees, grass stains, and first crushes, I miss it all. One minute I was graduating from kindergarten and joining little league and the next thing I know, I am graduating high school and picking out my major! I miss playing outside until the street lights came on, hearing my mom yell for me to come home, and not caring what boys thought. Where did it go?
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; As I walk the halls of Benson, I notice that kids are in too much of a hurry to grow up and move on. I have seen on more than one occasion where someone just tries to act their age and get a little goofy or talk about how they want to see High School Musical, and they get made fun of. We are still kids! As long as we rely on our parents, live in their home, and don’t pay the bills, we still have the right to mess up and just enjoy our lives. I don’t want to grow up, to be honest it scares me.
For some people it is their only way out of a horrible home life is to grow up and take care of themselves, and for those kids I wish you the best of luck. Go move mountains and make changes in the way people live their lives because I know you can do it. We all can. &amp;#160;Every single person here has the opportunity to make their life better. Yeah, sometimes life sucks, but you have to be willing to pick yourself up and move on with the hope that one day, you will have everything you wanted.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;
So I am going to cherish every last minute I have to be a kid. I am going to watch Disney channel, play with my cousin, and eat popsicles.

    <description>&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; If drama were vodka, our school would be wasted. It’s true! Everywhere you turn, you see fights, tears, and gossiping.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Drama is pointless. It makes everyone’s life a living nightmare. You tell your friend a secret, something personal, the whole school hears about it; you get mad at that person and POOF! You got yourself a pot of steamed drama.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Why do we do it? Why do we gossip? Are we that bored with our lives that we want to liven it up by creating stupid drama? Yeah stupid drama. That’s all that it is!

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Do you have any idea what drama can do to a person? Suicide, murder, fights, shootings, stress, paranoia, and the list goes on and on. Is it really worth it? Do you want that to be on your conscious?
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The next time you hear something, keep it to yourself please. Most of us don’t really care. If you keep it to yourself, there will be a 1% greater chance that it will not spread around, and a 100% chance that if it does, it will not be from you. That is a chance that you should be willing to take. You don’t have anything to lose other than that reputation as a drama queen.

    <description>&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
Holidays: Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter, and Halloween to name a few. What do these days symbolize to you?
&amp;#160;
Money? Candy? Presents? Cards? Partying?
&amp;#160;
How many of us expect these things? Haven't we been conditioned to know that on a few certain days every year we'll receive some of these and give some of these?
&amp;#160;
What about those who come from families that just barely make enough to keep the lights on every month-- those who live paycheck to paycheck. What about those who have never experienced what it's like to wake up Christmas morning to a stocking overflowing and presents under the tree? Those who don't know what it's like to be able to hop in their own cars, drive to the mall, and spend $20, $50, and even $100 at a time.
&amp;#160;
This isn't a cry for someone to feel sorry for those who are less fortunate and I'm not saying that all of us are or aren't; I'm not even saying that it's always been like this, maybe it's only been one year without a birthday or Christmas-- maybe more.
&amp;#160;
There's a moral to this, just stick with me.
&amp;#160;
No matter what your situation is, this next question applies to all:
&amp;#160;
Have you ever taken a second out of your happiness during the holiday season (or any time for that matter) to think about those who go without? Are you one of them?
&amp;#160;
When I was younger, I looked forward to the holidays because I knew that Santa or the Easter Bunny was going to bring me a whole bunch of goodies and that's all I looked forward to.
&amp;#160;
Then it happened.
&amp;#160;
At the age of seven, my mom's boyfriend of eleven years was sent to prison; she had to get a job and life became a whole lot harder. I began to notice how she struggled to pay the mortgage payment, buy groceries, and even basic necessities. We still celebrated the holidays, but I didn't look forward to them as much because I knew that there were either going to be a few presents, or worse, none at all and I was so used to just having that there, that I completely missed the true purpose of a holiday.
&amp;#160;
It's not about the material items; not about how much money you get, or how many presents you receive.
&amp;#160;
It's about love, respect, having the gift of life, and waking up every morning.
&amp;#160;
It's about celebrating what you DO have and not what you don't.
&amp;#160;
No matter who you are, where you came from, your financial situation, whatever. If you are reading this, you are blessed. You are blessed simply because there are people who care, people who have been in the same situations, people like you.
&amp;#160;
Even though Christmas and New Years have passed, I encourage each of you to try and do something to better the life of someone else this year. You never truly know what another person is going through.
&amp;#160;
A simple compliment or good deed, a &quot;thank you&quot; or even just asking how someone else's day is going.
&amp;#160;
Anything.
&amp;#160;
This act doesn't have to be anything spectacular, just make sure that when you're performing it, you do it wholeheartedly.
&amp;#160;
One word is capable of changing a person's life.
&amp;#160;
I believe that when one person humbles himself and goes out of his way to help another, it truly makes a difference.
&amp;#160;
We as a generation, as Benson Bunnies, are capable of making an impact on our school, our community, and even in the U.S. as a whole.
&amp;#160;
We are capable of changing this world and it all starts with a simple act of kindness.
&amp;#160;
Try it and you'll be amazed at what a difference it can make.
&amp;#160;
I DARE YOU!

    <title>Gang Related Violence </title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/362/Gang-Related-Violence.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Lately when you turn on the news you see their has been a lot shootings that’s been mostly gang related. So we asked students around Benson how they felt about gang related violence.&amp;#160;

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “I think in general all the violence needs to stop.” said Amber Nolan

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Which we (Michelle &amp;amp; Melissa) agree to that. It’s like what’s the point of killing each other, its no use to it. Same goes to being in a gang. We know a lot of teenagers that are in a gang just because. My questions to them is why? Why are you putting your life and your family’s life in danger? Why is it so cool to be in a gang when your life is fine? You got it good, you have a family, you have money, you have people that care about you, and so why are they in a gang. We understand if their in a gang because they have no one, and no body that cares about them especially if their parents treat them like their nothing.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “I think it’s just dumb being in a gang, you get no where.” said sophomore Aquishia Shepard.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Honestly yes…you being in a gang is going to get you far? How? Killing people? Tagging people’s property? Jumping people? Getting arrested? Selling drugs? We never knew doing all this would get us far. Well, because we know it’s not going to get us far. Our opinion and most people will agree to us but education should be our number priority.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “I thought about being in a gang before but I got out of it before it got too deep.” said Randy Butts.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Gang related violence is not the way in life but these questions are lift for you to answer do you want to live your life the right way or be gone before you even get to see the other side of life? Are opinions your answers?
