    <title>Destiny Youth Revival</title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/733/Destiny-Youth-Revival.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Got mid-week boredom on the brain? Well, switch off the TV because three days of fun and worship await at Glad Tidings Church.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Wednesday through Friday, there will be a Destiny Youth Revival event at the church. On Wednesday and Thursday, there will be a guest speaker from Colorado Springs, Pastor Jayme Montera. Montera will be coming to the church to lead services and on Friday the services will be turned over to Glad Tiding’s youth minister, Jesse Norman along with food and games at 5:30.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Also, as part of the event, Glad Tidings Church will be hosting a state-wide school competition. The high schools in Nebraska, including Benson, will be welcome to represent their school and weighing in. The school that has the heaviest pride will win a prize. But what will it all weigh up to?
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; For every school that weighs in over 1,500 pounds, Glad Tidings Church will rent out a movie theater for the school to watch a flick and party.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; If you’re interested it representing Benson or just feel like getting in touch with your spiritual side, the services will be held from November 11-13 at 6:30 pm at Glad Tidings Church at 7415 Hickory St.

    <title>Omaha Graffiti Scan</title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/730/Omaha-Graffiti-Scan.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; It seems like almost everywhere you go in Omaha, there’s always a patch of bright blue, or neon orange paint that splatters the sides of buildings or the city walls. Paint that’s not supposed to be there.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Graffiti has been around since the early days of Rome. However the typical graffiti that we think of usually consists of a little spray paint and a rebellious attitude. This defacement is most commonly affiliated with gangs marking their territory.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Although we may see a lot of this street writing around the city, there are efforts being made to curb the vandalism.
The Omaha Graffiti Scan is a city wide effort to reduce the amount of graffiti in our communities.&amp;#160;The Neighborhood Center has partnered up with UNO to head up this effort.
“Graffiti is a crime; it facilitates gang communications and escalates gang issues. It also decreases property values and is very expensive for our community to clean up,” said Crystal Rhoades, assistant director of the Neighborhood Center.
&amp;#160;
People who feel that this is a serious issue and want to help clean up the city, call Rhoades to get involved. Then, they help take pictures of the graffiti with GPS cameras and also aid in the actual cleaning up process.
&amp;#160;
Why should people care though? “Omaha is currently spending about 250,000.00&amp;#160;per year to clean up graffiti, it’s an expensive problem and if we are spending money to remove graffiti we aren't spending it on parks or libraries or other public services,” Rhoades said.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; For teenagers, this is an especially distressing problem. “It is an important issue for teens because most of the people convicted are in teens or early 20's,” said Rhoades, “The Nebraska Legislature also just strengthened penalties making graffiti a felony crime, which means it could potentially interfere with a young person’s ability to get a job or continue their education.”
&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; To contact Rhoades for more information on the Omaha Graffiti Scan, or if you’re interested in volunteering, you can e-mail her at crhoades@unomaha.eduor call her at 402-561-7569.

    <title>Omaha's own Hartland BBQ</title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/401/Omahas-own-Hartland-BBQ.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Red checkered table cloths, brick walls and the smell of fresh barbecue tantalize your senses as soon as the door to Hartland BBQ opens. You may get the feeling that you’ve just walked in to an outdoor picnic. Hartland BBQ is located on 5 7th and Radial Highway.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Along with the great atmosphere the price of the food is enough to turn you into a little piggy. For just $5.50 you can get the daily special which consists of either a chicken, pork or sausage sandwich, a bag of chips and a medium drink. The meal provides plenty of food to fill you up at a price that the average Joe can afford. Hartland BBQ also offers 3 different types of barbecue, hot, sweet and Hartland’s own Hartland sauce. With the first bite of Hartland’s food you can taste the difference. I chose the pork sandwich with the Hartland barbecue sauce. The tender meat and semi sweet barbecue sauce dances on your tongue for a while before your brain can process what’s happening. You are experiencing unique flavor. I highly recommend Hartland BBQ to anyone looking for a filling, cheap and fast meal. While Hartland BBQ may not have the most diverse menu, what they do have is great. I give Hartland BBQ 4 out of 5 stars. &amp;#160;

    <title>Native American Leadership Club</title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/374/Native-American-Leadership-Club.aspx</link>
    <description>
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Friday, December 12, 2008 the Native American Leadership Club went to Lincoln for a visit to learn about some of the culture’s prospects. The group helps people to feel comfortable, and helps with some school work (provides tutors), while at the same time, they learn some customs of the Native American culture. The club watches videos, play games, and Ms. Beveridge and Ms. O'Neil-Heavey try to inform them with the latest news from the reservations and help members learn more about their culture and history. Nena Edwards, Skyy Lovejoy, and Antoinia Edwards founded the club at Benson and Central High Schools. They feel it helps Native Americans feel more welcomed and recognized. Lots of the members are very involved in the culture, and they talk of what it’s like to lead two lives.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “My favorite thing is being with the group is learning more about Native Americans. I also like that it gives me a chance to meet new people. I like that all the adults are willing to help us when it's needed,” freshman Paula Sullivan. “Many of them check on us at least 3 times a week to see how everything at school and home are doing. It's nice to know that I always have someone to talk to. I don't think there is anything I don't like about this group.”

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The club members feel comfortable around each other.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;“The Hispanics have 'Latino Club' and I know that it's a place for them to feel comfortable because they&amp;#160;don't always fit in because they are 'different' and they are not always&amp;#160;comfortable&amp;#160;being around&amp;#160;the other students; that’s what we thought of when starting the club,” said senior Nena Edwards.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Curious as to why some of the newer members joined, I asked Sullivan her reason.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “I joined to get to know more about Native American history and to get a little more information and to look into different colleges,” said Sullivan. “I think its fun and gives me an opportunity to look at different colleges and it pushes me a little harder to go to college. When I need help with something there is always someone from the group that will sit down and talk to me or just help me with everyday stuff.”

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The members of the Native American Leadership club really seem to enjoy it. It appears to help it’s members in almost everyway possible.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “This makes me feel like a better student. I feel very confident and I feel that I’m doing better in my everyday life. It makes me feel that I can accomplish my goals,” said Sullivan.

    <title>Breast Cancer Walk</title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/154/Breast-Cancer-Walk.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; As people were standing outside waiting for the anticipated Palin to show, there was a perfect view of the many women covered in pink.&amp;#160;There was a total of 17,000 people lining the streets of downtown with a spirit that filled the air.&amp;#160;Laughter was heard as these women prepared for the run of their lives.&amp;#160;All of them were supporters of one cause.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Mrs. Cathy Armbeck-Hughes, a special education specialist, said, “It was a great time with my daughters and all the money was going to fight to find a cure for breast cancer.”
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women between the ages of 20 and 59 according to American Cancer Society.&amp;#160;A woman is diagnosed with cancer every 3 minutes and every thirteen minutes a woman will die.&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; “Every Year, my daughters and I are part of the walk.&amp;#160;Before I had my family, I would run the 10 miles.&amp;#160;Now I just try to model awareness and give back to my community.” said Armbeck-Hughes.&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The walk had women involved who had lost loved ones and women who have survived to tell about it.&amp;#160;T-shirts were made with a memorial to all of the women lost to this disease.&amp;#160;It opened up communications to the young women and girls who were there to read them.&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The walk did not focus on the downside of cancer, but the upside of surviving.&amp;#160;Armbeck-Hughes described the day as “a huge girl party, no stress, and little competition.”&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; She went on to say, “It was predominately women just having a good time.&amp;#160;We saw women dressed as angels, grandmas, and there was just positivity all around us.”&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; At the end of the race all of the survivors of cancer were given a pink rose to symbolize surviving.&amp;#160;The women that participated were given t-shirts and scarves.&amp;#160;The pattern on the scarf was the same as one that was present on a bookmark with some inspirational thoughts.&amp;#160;Overall the day raised money to continue the fight.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The bookmark said a quote by Vista Kelly which said, “Snowflakes are one of nature’s most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together.”

    <title>The Ranch of Terror</title>
    <link>http://www.ops.org/HIGH/BENSON/StudentLife/tabid/647/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/157/The-Ranch-of-Terror.aspx</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The screams echo through the blood infested house. With the hospital patients jumping out of every corner you have no time to think or understand what is going on. The Ranch of Terror has three very different haunted attractions, which more then likely will not send chills up your spine.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; With&amp;#160;a guy chasing people around with&amp;#160;a chainsaw it starts off like your average haunted playground but we were soon disappointed by the trails of fear with a&amp;#160;guy in&amp;#160;a mask guiding you to hope. This boring attraction starts off in a village of disembodied children that take you through a dark and very small cave like area. The only scary part of this is not that small children are jumping out; it is the fact that you can not see them in the pitch black cave.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; In many&amp;#160;buildings you go through you start to realize that these houses are somewhat unsafe. There are many holes in the ground that are not supposed to be there.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The next attraction is&amp;#160;the haunted hay rack ride. This ride is supposed to be an eerie and unsettling thrill, but to our amazement ended up being a calm and relaxing ride for you to just sit and talk.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The Ranch of terror haunted house, itself was not too bad, but the acting was not to die for. The acting was a valiant effort however it was sorely lacking in the scare factor. All in all the entire house was a great place for your friends to just hang out but not the best place&amp;#160;to go for a scare.

    <description>&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Do you ever visit the zoo and go down to the Gorillas and just have questions about them? Well then keep reading. The Hubbard Gorilla Valley was remodeled and reopened on April 4, 2004, this cutting-edge exhibit and management facility lets Omaha be a major player in gorilla conservation.&amp;#160; It makes the expansion of Omaha’s gorilla population to 25 animals of all ages and sexes.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; A state-of-the-art breeding and exhibit facility greatly increases the chances of success in producing off-spring, genetic research, and health programs. Omaha’s reproductive research team helped produce the world’s first test tube gorilla. Over the past ten years they have developed the largest gorilla sperm bank in the world. Omaha’s current research partners include zoos in North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; When your walking through you probably wonder how the zoo keepers tell all the gorillas apart. Gorilla identification is done by looking at a gorilla’s nose print. No two are the same. They are for example like our fingerprints. A gorilla’s nose print can be as wide as 4 inches. That’s a big fingerprint.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Whenever you are in the gorilla house do you wonder what they eat? In the wild gorillas eat a variety of fruits, seeds, stems, pith, shoots, tree bark, and who could forget the creepy crawlies known as insects. Now at the zoo &amp;#160;they make the diet a lot more healthy for the gorillas. They eat fruit, veggies, and are fed a wide variety of nutrients to keep them in tip top shape. In one day a silverback may consume 2 apples, 2 bananas, 2 oranges, 8 carrots, 2 pounds of sweet potatoes, 3 bunches of celery, 2 green peppers, 4 ounces of cabbage, and some other items gorillas enjoy.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Something you might not know is that mountain gorillas are one of the most endangered species. Bushmeat trade, habitat distruction, and civil war are the main factors of this madness. In 1981, there were about 250 gorillas left. But due to the protection efforts and hard work of Dian Fossey and his crew the population decline was halted. Now there are about 600 left.
&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; If you ever want to get involved in taking care of these magnificent animals you’ll need lots of education. You’ll need to know math, biology, english, chemistry, etc. Many hard-working years of experience will put you to the test as you give these animals the proper care and treatment needed to survive.

&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; After reading this I hope you have learned something new about gorillas. Next time you are at the zoo and you enter the gorilla house you will know some of the answer’s to your questions.

OMAHA, Neb. _ Sarah Palin's visit to Nebraska on Sunday came as national polls show that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is struggling in the presidential race. It also came as Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is making a historic bid to win one of Nebraska's electoral votes _ the first time a Democrat has competed in this Republican stronghold in four decades.
Democrats and others have said Palin's visit indicates that McCain can't even count on traditional red states like Nebraska this year.
Palin denied that.
&quot;The pundits were saying, 'Check out where she's going. She's going to Nebraska.' The pundits were saying, 'The only reason she would be going there, is because they're scared. They have to shore up votes,'&quot; Palin said.
&quot;I so wanted to reach into that TV and say 'no.' I'm going to Nebraska because I want to go to Nebraska,&quot; Palin said.
Palin's visit to the Midwestern state was quick and it came with about 27 hours' notice. The Nebraska Republican Party didn't learn of the visit until Saturday afternoon. They quickly scrambled to find a venue, and sent out a request for help that was answered by more than 150 volunteers.
Palin's appearance followed a rollercoaster of a month. A surprise pick as vice president, some have questioned whether she has the experience to be president after she was tapped by McCain. She then became a media sensation and a darling of the GOP's conservative base after she gave a rousing speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn.
However, Palin came under intense scrutiny after she stumbled in a couple of national interviews, including one with CBS anchor Katie Couric. Since then, she has become fodder for late-night comedians who have questioned her statements that Alaska's proximity to Russia helps boost her foreign policy credentials.
Palin mentioned the Couric interview in her Omaha speech, calling it a &quot;less than successful interview&quot; with &quot;someone in the mainstream media.&quot;
She told the crowd that she became impatient with some of Couric's questioning, saying she believes America wanted to know more about where she stands on the issues than what newspapers or magazines she reads each day.
She also said she was just trying to help out one of the comedians who has garnered national attention impersonating Palin.
&quot;I was just trying to give Tina Fey more material _ job security for 'Saturday Night Live,'&quot; said Palin.
