Project Description:

The Great Summer Jobs Program focuses on reducing violent crime and building strong relationships with youth and young adults in targeted high crime and poverty neighborhoods in North Omaha. Last summer, over 150 youth and young adults participated in a variety of educational and work experience opportunities that included summer school, GED and entrepreneurial courses.

Project Objectives:

The program consists of an academic portion and an 8-10 week work experience opportunity for each participant during the summer for 216 participants. Students are placed in work sites located within the community and Omaha Public Schools. Participants’ work 20hrs each week and are paid every two weeks.

Performance Indicators:
By July 23, 2010:
 
Identify 200+ secondary students that will enroll in pre-employment courses to provide additional practice to master basic core subject skills (math & reading).
Middle school students will enroll in a 4-week session “pro-Social Skills’ session to include but not be limited to conflict resolution, team building activities, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens etc.

150+ Senior High students will be placed in an 8-10 week work-experience opportunity within the community and/or OPS work sites

   
Accomplishments:

266 secondary students were identified, with 216 students (176) 16 to 21 year olds and (40) 14 and 15 year olds being served. 50 students were placed on a waiting list. All students participated in the pre-employment courses of Financial Literacy, Life and Work Skills, and Special Topic.

40 Middle school students enrolled of which 38 completed the program (1 No Show   and 1 dismissed from the program). Students participated in the aforementioned sessions and Career Center courses in Culinary, Broadcasting, Small Engines, and Building Construction.  This entire group of students was given an assessment in Reading and targeted students participated in the Read Right Program.

. 176 High school students participated in the work experience program and were assigned to 27 businesses.
